Phone Bank
I tried out phone banking for the first time with VA democrats.
- The phone bank doesn't require going anywhere. You can do it from home.
- I would suggest using skype or google voice to make calls rather than your phone.
- You might want to go to the dems offices the first time to know what you're doing and get comfortable.
- You aren't calling "random people" - it's reaching undecided or lean democrat voters.
- You aren't trying to convince people - theres 5 or so questions about voting intention. You don't have to follow the "script" - and I didn't.
- The purpose is
- To determine if they lean democrat. If so they can be later reminded to vote.
- Some people say they are prepared to volunteer. If they do they will get a follow up call.
That said you do hit some obnoxious people, and you may get runs where people don't pick up.
Canvassing
Canvassing, also known as door knocking or phone banking, is the systematic initiation of direct contact with individuals, commonly used during political campaigns.
I've gone out with fellow democrats now many times. The objectives and process are very similar to phone banking
- The houses you visit aren't random - they are undecided or lean democrats typically
- Similarly you aren't trying to convince people
- You are trying to encourage people to vote, and if they are democrat leaning volunteer
- It's arguably easier and more enjoyable than phone banking
- It is supposed to be more effective
On the downside
- Requires going out and speaking to people
- You might need to put on sunscreen, deal with heat or elements in general
- Typically takes around 2 hours per area
